Post-Global Aesthetics

Welt(er)schöpfung in lateinamerikanischen Literaturen des 21. Jahrhunderts

(English version see below)

World Creation and Exhaustion in 21st Century Latin American Literatures

Over the past decade, the optimistic paradigm of globality, which had found its cultural-theory counterpart in new universalist and cosmopolitan discourses, finally came to an end in the face of multidimensional crises. However, this did not render the tangible phenomena of connectedness obsolete. Under these circumstances, the burning need for alternative concepts of globality – including, and especially, in literature – has grown especially apparent. The latest trends in Latin American literatures can be seen as role models for post-global aesthetics worldwide. Artists there, more than anywhere else, have been responding to the asymmetries of globalization processes in works of literature that enjoy worldwide circulation thanks to their strong ties to Western markets and narrative forms.

The project examines a broad-ranging corpus of twenty-first-century Latin American writings, introducing the concept of Welt(er)schöpfung (world exhaustion and creation) into the debate on post-globality. The concept is a two-sided coin combining the catastrophic exhaustion of practices of globalization and theoretical notions of the world, on one side, with productive processes of world creation that propose new imaginaries of globality, on the other. Welt(er)schöpfung is particularly concerned with narratives around ecology, the Anthropocene, and geopoetics; technological developments within the context of the digital revolution; and epidemic realities and fictions. These themes are central to the project and promise to deliver ample insights, especially given their entanglement.

The central research question regarding phenomena of Welt(er)schöpfung in post-global Latin American literatures, will be investigated in two complementary sub-projects. The first sub-project is documenting the post-global aesthetic repertoire of literary forms and seeking out new models of the world. The second sub-project, meanwhile, is considering material aspects of literature, emphasizing contextual approaches to production, circulation, and reception research. How is world literature created in a post-global era?

The project is supported by the German Science Fund (DFG).

World Exhaustion/Agotamiento del mundo: this theoretical concept has emerged against the backdrop of today’s world culture in a distinctive and ambivalent way— one characterized by manifold post-global dynamics. In this congress, we aim to analyse the implications of the term “world exhaustion”, examining geopolitical and cultural effects that are particularly salient in the literatures and cultures in the Latin American region. The conceptual term is suitable for the ambivalence of the lived experiences of societies that have been marked by centuries of globalization— and for the artistic production that seeks to give form and meaning to these experiences.

Post-Global Aesthetics

21st Century Latin American Literatures and Cultures

Phenomena such as the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, or the surge of political populism show that the current phase of accelerated globalization is over. New concepts are needed in order to respond to this exhaustion of the global project: the volume scrutinizes these responses in the aesthetic realm and under a "post-global" banner, while incorporating alternative, non-Western epistemologies and literatures of the post-colonial Global South.
